New Footpath to Beinn Ghlas Summit Opens

A newly restored footpath to the summit of Beinn Ghlas was officially opened last weekend, completing a two-year project to improve access to one of the glen’s most popular hills. The path, which had suffered severe erosion from heavy footfall and winter storms, has been rebuilt using traditional techniques and locally sourced stone.

A Collaborative Project

The restoration was a partnership between the Glenbrae Community Council, the Outdoor Access Trust, and the John Muir Trust. A team of twelve path workers, including four trainees from the village, spent last summer and autumn rebuilding over two kilometres of path, installing drainage, and stabilising the steepest sections above the tree line.

“The old path was becoming dangerous,” said project lead Hamish MacDonald. “Water was running down it like a river in winter, and the erosion was spreading into the hillside. The new path will protect the habitat and make the walk safer for everyone.”

Enjoying the Hills

Beinn Ghlas, at 732 metres, is the most accessible of the hills surrounding Glenbrae and offers panoramic views across Loch Brae and the surrounding glens. The improved path is expected to benefit both local walkers and the increasing number of visitors exploring the area.

A guided walk along the new path is planned for Saturday 12 July, led by Hamish and open to all. Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are essential. Meet at the village hall car park at 9 am.
